Sometimes life can turn into a strange twist of parody, sprinkled with a bit of humor making it, might I say, quite interesting at times. This is especially true if you have children — and I when I mean children, I’m talking about the endless humor and the WTF moments our college aged children bestow upon us.

It’s in these moments, that I tend to channel my inner Weird Al Yankovic and let loose the proverbial “changing of the song” to fit whatever situation or season I’m in. So it’s no surprise that as my college aged son returns for winter break, “Weird Old Mom-ovic”, would be back to singing a new tune to keep from losing my mind at the insanity of what transpires with each semester break. So dear son, now that you’re home again, let’s light up the Christmas tree and turn up the music for mom’s version of “The 12 Days of Christmas” — more aptly renamed this year to “The 12 Days of Winter Break”.

The 12 Days of Winter Break

On the 1st day of winter break my college kid gave to me: another college ornament for the family Christmas tree.

On the 2nd day of winter break my college kid gave to me: 2 exclamations of “I’m bored” and another college ornament for the family Christmas tree.

On the 3rd day of winter break my college kid gave to me: 3 scheduled doctor’s appointments, 2 exclamations of “I’m bored”, and another college ornament for the family Christmas tree.

On the 4th day of winter break my college kid gave to me: 4 daily grocery trips, 3 scheduled doctor’s appointments, 2 exclamations of “I’m bored”, and another college ornament for the family Christmas tree.

On the 5th day of winter break my college kid gave to me: 5 golden WTF moments, 4 daily grocery trips, 3 scheduled doctor’s appointments, 2 exclamations of “I’m bored”, and another college ornament for the family Christmas tree.

On the 6th day of winter break my college kid gave to me: 6 hours of screaming at video games, 5 golden WTF moments, 4 daily grocery trips, 3 scheduled doctor’s appointments, 2 exclamations of “I’m bored”, and another college ornament for the family Christmas tree.

On the 7th day of winter break my college kid gave to me: 7 towels used daily, 6 hours of screaming at video games, 5 golden WTF moments, 4 daily grocery trips, 3 scheduled doctor’s appointments, 2 exclamations of “I’m bored”, and another college ornament for the family Christmas tree.

On the 8th day of winter break my college kid gave to me: 8 requests for spending money, 7 towels used daily, 6 hours of screaming at video games, 5 golden WTF moments, 4 daily grocery trips, 3 scheduled doctor’s appointments, 2 exclamations of “I’m bored”, and another college ornament for the family Christmas tree.

On the 9th day of winter break my college kid gave to me: 9 minutes of mom time, 8 requests for spending money, 7 towels used daily, 6 hours of screaming at video games, 5 golden WTF moments, 4 daily grocery trips, 3 scheduled doctor’s appointments, 2 exclamations of “I’m bored”, and another college ornament for the family Christmas tree.

On the 10 day of winter break my college kid gave to me: 10 friends a knocking, 9 minutes of mom time, 8 requests for spending money, 7 towels used daily, 6 hours of screaming at video games, 5 golden WTF moments, 4 daily grocery trips, 3 scheduled doctor’s appointments, 2 exclamations of “I’m bored”, and another college ornament for the family Christmas tree.

On the 11th day of winter break my college kid gave to me: 11 loads of laundry, 10 friends a knocking, 9 minutes of mom time, 8 requests for spending money, 7 towels used daily, 6 hours of screaming at video games, 5 golden WTF moments, 4 daily grocery trips, 3 scheduled doctor’s appointments, 2 exclamations of “I’m bored”, and another college ornament for the family Christmas tree.

On the 12th day of winter break my college kid gave to me: 12 hours a day of sleeping, 11 loads of laundry, 10 friends a knocking, 9 minutes of mom time, 8 requests for spending money, 7 towels used daily, 6 hours of screaming at video games, 5 golden WTF moments, 4 daily grocery trips, 3 scheduled doctor’s appointments, 2 exclamations of “I’m bored”, and another college ornament for the family Christmas tree.

And the greatest gift of all — having him home for one last winter break and the endless inspiration he gives to me.

What things will your college aged kids bestow you with this year? Drop a comment below, I’d love to read about the humor in your life.
